Double Jogging Stroller
The term double jogging stroller refers to any stroller that has three wheels, seats two babies and is normally
used by an adult who is running, jogging or quickly walking. They can easily cost two to four times as much as
standard versions but they offer a much smoother ride. They aren't as compact or maneuverable as their regular
counterparts because they have a fixed front tire to help it track straight. This is great for running, but it
limits their versatility. All-terrain versions have a swiveling front wheel for easy maneuverability. However,
those types are not designed for running and even with the front wheel in a locked position many find it hard to
keep them tracking straight.
There are many things to consider before purchasing one. First, what will you be doing while using it, walking
or running? If you are a runner or are going to be on bumpy off-road paths you want to make sure you get larger
tires. The best wheel size is 20 inches. This allows a smooth ride and still allows easy maneuvering over curbs and
bumps. If you are a jogger or very active walker, you want to go with a 16-inch tire. This is the size that most
people buy. This size strikes a great balance between smoothness and practicality. If you are a walker and will
only be using it for shopping or strolling the best wheel size is 12 inches. This size still allows you to move
through obstacles easily.
Safety
Pediatricians say you should not take your baby exercising with you until he or she is about 6 months old and
has more fully developed neck muscles and some experts even recommend waiting until your babies are 1 year old.
After you decide your babies are old enough, you will still need to purchase a model with a fully reclining seat
because they can't support the weight of their heads and must lie flat.
Every version should come with a safety harness for your children. Look for a five-point harness. A three-point
belt which only goes around the waist and between the legs is less common than a five-point belt which also goes
over the shoulders offering more security. Straps are provided at the shoulders, waist and crotch. Make sure
they're easy to adjust, comfortable and made of a durable material.
Make sure your double jogger has both a hand brake and a parking brake, especially if you are going to
run on smooth or bumpy roads. A hand brake with a parking button allows you to slow down quickly and a parking
brake lets you keep it still while you're not holding it. Make sure it won't tip backwards when light pressure is
placed on the handlebars. These models are not made to withstand the weight of shopping bags, diaper bags, or other
items. They can cause it to tip over injuring you and your child. So check for sturdiness and stability which means
look for a wide wheel base with the seat mounted low and deep within the frame. Your purchase should include a
wrist strap. This allows you to stay connected to it so that it doesn’t get away from you when you are
exercising.
Convenience
Look for pneumatic tires if you jog every day. Sixteen-inch tires are fine for general-use strollers, however
20-inch tires are recommended for those who run every day and want the smoothest ride. These larger wheels provide
better performance and less arm fatigue while running. If you only plan on the occasional run 16-inch wheels are
acceptable while smaller ones are fine for walking. Additionally, choose wheels with sealed bearings which allow
for smoother rolling and easier turns. The other important thing to consider is the material. Steel is cheaper but
it rusts easily especially in humid climates. Alloy wheels cost a little more but it’s worth it to keep them
rust-free.
When choosing, make sure it's not only light to push but easy to carry. Steel-framed products are cheaper but
they are also heavier and prone to rust. An aluminum frame is much lighter and easier to push while running. Look
for easy assembly and folding. You shouldn't have to consult the user manual each time you fold it. Some models
require you to take off one or more tires. If this is the case, look for a version with quick-release tabs. A
comfortable handlebar and handgrip are important. Even better, look for an adjustable handle so that both you and
your partner can share pushing duties if you are of vastly different heights. Additionally, make sure the frame is
far enough from your legs when you're in full stride to avoid bashing your shins, especially if the seat is fully
reclined.
Comfort
Shock absorbers and a solid frame give the smoothest ride on rough terrain. An upholstered and padded frame
offers the best support for your babies. Some are equipped with a reclinable seat and some have two reclining
positions. This will allow your babies to lie down and nap while you are exercising or shopping. They also should
come with a sun canopy to protect your child from getting burned. Some go a step further and include a zip-on
vinyl weather shield that keeps your child dry if you are out in bad weather.
Additional Considerations
Washable seat padding is always a plus so better models typically have washable upholstery. Use caution when
buying online. Variations in height, strength and personal preferences are difficult to consider if you don't
purchase in person. Also remember that doubles are trickier to push and maneuver than singles especially once you
add the weight of two kids. So even if you eventually decide to buy online you'll still want to test drive a few
models before buying.
